8 simple rules of Data Protection – Ahead of 2018 changes.

The General Data Protection Regulation(GDPR) outline the best practices to correctly manage Data protection in Ireland.In May 2018, a new set of Data Protection regulations will come into effect in Ireland. These regulations and guidelines comply with the latest European Union(EU) data protection laws.

The GDPR Awareness Coalition is a not-for-profit, fixed-term initiative designed to assist in raising awareness of the data privacy obligations for companies resulting from the implementation of the GDPR.

This policy outlines the best practices to protect data and ensure that clients understand the rules governing the use of data to which they have access.

The Eight Rules of Data Protection are:

1.Obtain and process information fairly.

2.Keep it only for one or more specified, explicit and lawful purposes.

3.Use and disclose it only in ways compatible with these purposes.

4.Keep it safe and secure.

5.Keep it accurate, complete and up-to-date.

6.Ensure that it is adequate, relevant and not excessive.

7.Retain it for no longer than is necessary for the purpose or purposes.

8.Give a copy of his/her personal data to an individual, on request.
